"I am--I am a Chinese": The Death of Plural Identities in Mrs. Spring Fragrance

Amidst the ubiquitous racist discourse of 19th century, Sui Sin Far emerged as a pioneering Asian American writer, dedicating her life to writing fiction, essays, and journalistic articles that combatted anti-Chinese sentiment. Situated at complex nexus racial, religious, socio-economic tensions, short story collection Mrs. Spring Fragrance (1912) illustrate collision between Chinese efforts preserve their cultural traditions Western assimilatory forces. While few scholars have commented on role children in Fragrance, this essay draws attention neglected subject, arguing represents malleable, organic sites for authorities reinforce constructions singular identity. Within nation holds no place existence “un-American,” how do malleable bodies fall victim singularity? Coupled with Amartya Sen’s identity theory, features deconstruction three stories—“In Land Free,” “Pat Pan,” “The Wavering Image”—and its characters’ grappling divergent versus affiliations.
